Lives Lost on Mt Disappointment

On August 5th 2021 a plaque was unveiled at the top of Mt Disappointment in honour of all the RAAF airmen who lost their lives on the mountain while in service of our country.

The event was planned to include many of the family members of the airmen but unfortunately the Covid -19 bans on travel meant that most of the families could not attend. So it was planned to have an event when the Covid situation allowed and invite the families to attend. The event was planned for the 6th August 2022 and many more family members were discovered in the year that had passed.

The Friends of Disappointment and Wandong History Group together organised a service in commemoration of the lives lost followed by lunch and a display of the air crashes. Relatives then made the journey to the plaque where wreaths were laid in honour of the young men whose lives were cut short far to early.

The family members attending were grateful to have the chance to see where the crashes occurred and pay their respects to their family member.

Les Lewis began the research into the crashes 23 years ago and his research was picked up by the friends of Disappointment members who then asked the Wandong History Group to help with the organising of the events. Without the dedication to the research from Les these events would not have occurred, and the airmen would never have been locally recognised. Now the plaque is there for all to see and take a moment to remember those lives lost.

From Patricia Noud (sister of Terrence Hallinan)

Thank you Trevor,
Would just like you to know the Hallinan group of 10 had a most enjoyable and emotional weekend, wonderful for all the sons and daughters and nephews and nieces of Terrys three sisters to celebrate their uncle in this way.
Our thanks to all the wonderful people for oganising this very special occasion. Personally, just being able to visit the plaque was a very big highlight for me, although a bit adventurous!
Again our very sincere thanks to all
Patricia Noud
