Preserving the history of

WANDONG

The Wandong History Group was formed in 2012 to record, preserve and promote the history of the township and its surrounding area. The Wandong History Group has been operating for ten years and is located in the newly renovated premises, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Cnr. Dry Creek Crescent and Wandong Avenue, Wandong.

Since 2012, the History Group has gathered a substantial amount of historical material, documents, maps, archives and photographs on the district’s early settlement history; the industrial operations of the township and nearby forests of Mt. Disappointment; the mining activities at Clonbinane and profiles on those who lived and worked in the district including our war veterans who served their nation. Our collection  includes a rare 1898 Photograph Album depicting the saw milling operations of Wandong, Yarrawonga and Warburton, some 300 photographs depicting various aspects of the town’s development and historical objects. We hold regular public exhibitions displaying our collection material and we publish our work.

Wandong – More than
just a town!

The vibrant township of Wandong holds stories of an innovative past, the home of a large industrial sawmilling complex.

Mt Disappointment
Forest Region

The Comet Mill, once a village of 300 people now lies silent to the sounds of saw millers, splitters and hewers.

Their sacrifice and
service

After 100 years, we finally acknowledge the service of our war veterans and their stories.
